Meet the Characters in Noni’s world!

Cartoon illustration of a playful, animated horse with a white and orange body. Noni the Pony from the Noni the Pony book series by Alison Lester.

She’s playfully cheeky and loves horsing around. She also takes time to dream, ponder and wonder at the world around her. Her own jokes are SO FUNNY she can’t help but pony-snort with laughter before she even gets to the punch line. Quick-witted and outgoing, Noni loves organising adventures for her best friends. Noni is happiest when she’s galloping across the lush paddocks of her idyllic Waratah Bay farm, cantering down leafy bush tracks and trotting along the spectacular beach - as she and her paw-pals explore the wonders of nature all around.

Noni is definite and determined. Full of exciting ideas, sometimes she’s blinkered and struggles to let go of plans even in the face of impossibly high hurdles... But she’s loyal to her friends and neighbours, and once she realises someone’s upset, she finds a way to change direction, so no-one gets left behind.

Noni the Pony

Dave Dog from the Noni the Pony book series.

Dave is a bouncy ball of terrier/toddler energy! Playful and loyal, he loves racing and chasing, and will leap into adventure without hesitation. He darts from impulse to impulse at a mile a minute, and he’s fascinated by everything – digging a hole one moment, then chasing a blow fly the next moment, then wonder what Noni’s doing and dash off to check if she’s missing him. Everyone knows how Dave is feeling by his waggily tail, alert or flopping ears.

Dave looks up to Coco and Noni as his older four-legged siblings, and will do anything to help them, even though he sometimes forgets what they asked him to do before it’s done - he gets easily distracted, especially when he latches on to a super-stinky smell that he just has to sniff out! His enthusiasm and impulsiveness get him into trouble – he’s a ‘dash first, ask later’ kind of dog.

Luckily he’s got big hearted Noni and clued-in Coco to look out for him, especially when he gets worked up – just like a toddler, he can be howling with laughter one moment, and howling with tears the next, then have a total crash-out in the blink of an eye! Dave is always on the lookout for friends, and bonds instantly with everyone he licks! But when the thunder rumbles or strange sounds echo, Dave’s happy place is snuggled in the hay with Noni and Coco.

Dave Dog

Coco the Cat from the Noni the Pony book series.

Coco is a clued-in “catten”! She’s not big on rushing, because she likes to consider all her options before pouncing in. Besides, she’s always got very important things to do – like grooming her fur, scratching her favourite post... Content in her own company, she needs plenty of me-ow time. Cat-napping in cosy Home Shed her idea of purrrfection.

Coco is the self-appointed big sister of these four-legged best friends. She loves being needed to do what she does best – like scaling a tree to get a better view of what’s ahead, picking apples for Mr Emu from the highest branches, or urging Dave to ride on Nonis’ back with her, so they can all see the rainbow after the storm That said, she’s not fussed about always going out and about, especially if it means wet paws and wet fur. Bleurgh. Nuh, she’s got everything she needs in Home Shed. Mostly... Of course, she’d be sad if her friends left her out of any really exciting plans...

While Coco can be a cat of few purrs, her twitching tail and expressive whiskers let you know what’s she’s really thinking! Coco can be a tricky tabby... she’s got very good at hitching a ride on Noni’s back when they’re heading off on an adventure, or coaxing Dave to get what she needs by turning it into a game of fetch. Of course, she loves her best friends to bits, and she’s never really catty, but she is a little cunning when it comes to getting what she wants... And yet, she’s always happy to offer a comforting paw.
